Today, we received some feedback from Herman and Margit during our first consultation hour. We were expected to present them the project and hear their thoughts about it.
Purpose of the Lesson
Herman and Margit said that we should pitch the concept to them and were a bit disappointed that we could not support what we were saying with any sketches or visuals. To our defense, we had not known what to expect from this lesson. I personally had thought of it to be more of a design consultation lesson instead of a concept review, tailored to solve design issues with the students. But now that we have been through our first consultation, we know how it works and will do better next time.
Feedback from Herman
Herman's feedback about our installation was quite positive. He liked the idea of the letters inspired by #iamsterdam and encouraged us to think about other possibilities to realise them, such as virtual reality letters and 3D modeling / Unity. Of course he had to say such a thing because he is really passionate about these things. On the other hand, he had a valid point: We have been so focused on creating a physical object that we narrowed ourselves down quite a lot from the start.
Feedback from Margit
Margit's feedback was less positive, but criticism always paves the way for improvement. She said that a connection to the client's needs - promoting Enschede and making people stay - was missing. For promoting Enschede, we thought that our idea was already quite suitable because with our hashtag #myenschede or whatever we're going to choose as a hashtag, the letters are going to get a lot of attention. (As I write this, it might be a good idea to set up our socials asap, in order to lead people along the progress and gain followers.)
Our Conclusion
Although criticism of a concept you're passionate about never feels good, we all had to admit that Margit was right. Therefore, in the break between this session and the next lesson, we decided to think about the added value we could give this installation, so that the client is satisfied.
